One of the most time-consuming tasks after a bereavement is informing banks, government departments, and other organisations. These free services can help take much of that burden away.
When someone dies, executors and next of kin typically need to contact dozens of organisations - from banks and pension providers to government departments and companies with mailing lists. Below are three free services that can make this process significantly easier.
You may have already been told about the Tell Us Once service when registering the death.

Free financial institution notification service
NotifyNOW is a free service, provided by The Estate Registry, that lets you notify multiple banks, building societies, insurance companies, utility companies, and other financial institutions about a death. Rather than writing individual letters or making dozens of phone calls, you submit the details once and NotifyNOW securely handles the notifications on your behalf.
Report a death to multiple government departments
Tell Us Once is a free government service that allows you to report a death to most government organisations in a single notification. This covers HMRC, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), local councils and more - saving you from contacting each separately. After registering a death you should receive a reference number to use Tell Us Once.
Stop unwanted post being sent to the deceased
Stop Mail is a free service, provided by the Bereavement Support Network, that removes the name and address of a deceased person from direct mailing lists, helping to stop distressing and unnecessary post arriving at the family home. It contacts a wide range of organisations on your behalf.
EstateCopilot automatically generates notification tasks for your estate administration checklist, including reminders to use these free services.
